Structure of testis: Each testis has about 250 compartment called testicular lobules.
Each testicular lobule contains one to three highly coiled seminiferous tubules in which sperms are produced.
Seminiferous tubule: Each seminiferous tubule is lined internally by two types of cells: male germ cells (spermatogonia) and sertoli cells.
Male germ cells :
(i) They are arranged in 4 to 8 layers.
The male germ cells undergo meiotic divisions finally leading to sperm formation.
(ii) Sertoli cells (provide nutrition to the germ cells)
They are placed between developing sperms.
(iii) Leydig cells (interstitial cells)
The regions outside the seminiferous tubules called interstitial spaces, contain small blood vessels and interstitial cells or leydig cells.
Leydig cells synthesise and secrete testicular hormones called androgens.
Other immunologically competent cells are also present in interstitial spaces.

The combined secretions of these glands are responsible for formation of semen.
(1) Seminal vesicle : A pair of seminal vesicle is present near the base of bladder. Vas deferens joins with seminal duct and forms ejaculatory duct.
Seminal fluid is a thick, viscous, fluid, rich in nutrients like fructose, vitamin C, calcium and some enzymes.
It produces 60% fluid of semen.
(2) Prostate gland : The prostate gland, located behind the bladder, produces a milky alkaline secretion, that helps maintain and increase sperm viablity.
The prastate gland opens into the urinogenital tract by several small ducts.
(3) Bulbourethral gland : A pair of bulbourethral glands are located under the prostate gland on either side of the urethra.
Like the prostate gland, it secretes a basic alkaline fluid, which helps in the lubrication of the penis during intercourse. Also, helps the penis to become sticky.

The alveoli open into mammary tubules.

The acrosome is filled with enzymes that helps in fertilisation with the ovum.
(ii) Middle Piece : The middle piece possesses numerous mitochondria, which produce energy for the movement.

Answer

Spermatogenesis is a process by which mature sperm cells are produced from immature male germ cells (spermatogonia) in testes. It begins at puberty.
There are following three steps in the formation of spermatids from spermatogonia.
The spermatogonia (sing. spermatogonium) are present on the inner wall of seminiferous tubules.
(1) Proliferative Phase : They multiply by mitotic division and increase in number.
Each spermatogonium is diploid and contains 46 chromosomes.
Some of the spermatogonia called primary spermatocytes, periodically undergo meiosis.
(2) Growth Phase : Some of the spermatogonia increase in size by accumulating nourishing materials from the germinal cells and are called primary spermatocyte.
(3) Maturation Phase : A primary spermatocyte completes the first meiotic division (reduction division) leading to formation of two equal, haploid cells called secondary spermatocytes, which have only 23 chromosomes each.
The secondary spermatocytes undergo the second meiotic division to produce four equal, haploid spermatids. The number of chromosome in each spermatid is 23.
The middle part of the sperm contains thousands of mitochondria providing energy for movement.
Effect of hormone : Spermatogenesis starts at the age of puberty due to significant increase in the secretion of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH). This is a hypothalamic hormone.
The increased levels of GnRH then act at the anterior pituitary gland and stimulate secretion of two gonadotropins – luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH).
LH : LH acts at the Leydig cells and stimulates synthesis and secretion of androgens. Androgens, in turn, stimulate the process of spermatogenesis.
FSH : FSH acts on the Sertoli cells and stimulates secretion of some factors which help in the process of spermiogenesis.
Spermiogenesis : The spermatids are transformed into spermatozoa (sperms) by the process called spermiogenesis.
Mature sperm contains head, neck, middle part & tail.
Sperm contains haploid nucleus, which has anterior cap like structure (acrosome), rich in enzyme and helps in the fertilisation with ovum.
After spermiogenesis, sperm heads become embedded in the sertoli cells, and are finally released from the seminiferous tubules by the process called spermiation.

Answer

The process of formation of a mature female gamete is called oogenesis.
It is initiated during the embryonic development stage when a couple of million gamete mother cells (oogonia) are formed within each fetal ovary; no more oogonia are formed and added after birth.
These cells (oogonia) start dividing and enter into prophase-I of the meiotic division and get temporarily arrested at that stage, called primary oocytes.
Each primary oocyte then gets surrounded by a layer of granulosa cells and is called the primary follicle. A large number of these follicles degenerate during the phase from birth to puberty. Therefore, at puberty only 60,000 - 80,000 primary follicles are left in each ovary.
At puberty, the primary follicles get surrounded by more layers of granulosa cells and a new theca and are called secondary follicles.
The secondary follicle soon transforms into a tertiary follicle which is characterised by a fluid filled cavity called antrum. The theca layer is organised into an inner theca interna and an outer theca externa.
It is at this stage that the primary oocyte within the tertiary follicle grows in size and completes its first meiotic division. It is an unequal division resulting in the formation of a large haploid secondary oocyte and a tiny first polar body.
The secondary oocyte retains bulk of the nutrient rich cytoplasm of the primary oocyte.
The tertiary follicle further changes into the mature follicle or Graafian follicle.
The secondary oocyte forms a new membrane called zona pellucida surrounding it.
The Graafian follicle now ruptures to release the secondary oocyte (ovum) from the ovary by the process called ovulation.
During fertilisation, sperm fuses with secondary Oocyte which stimulates its division, releasing secondary polar body.

Answer

In human females, menstruation is repeated at an average interval of about 28/29 days, and the cycle of events starting from one menstruation till the next one is called the menstrual cycle.
The first menstruation begins at puberty and is called menarche.
The changes in the ovary and the uterus endometrium are induced by changes in the levels of pituitary secretion of gonadotropin hormones.
Menstrual cycle is well understood by taking a cycle of 28 days which can be divided into three main phases.
(i) Menstrual phase (1 - 5 days):
The cycle starts with this phase, when menstrual flow occurs and it lasts for 3-5 days.
The menstrual flow results due to breakdown of endometrial lining of the uterus and its blood vessels which forms liquid that comes out through vagina.
Menstruation only occurs if the released ovum is not fertilised.
Lack of menstruation may be indicative of pregnancy.
However, it may also be caused due to some other underlying causes like stress, poor health etc.
(ii) Follicular phase / Proliferative phase
(Day 6 - 14):
The menstrual phase is followed by the follicular phase.
During this phase, the primary follicles in the ovary grow to become a fully mature Graafian follicle and simultaneously the endometrium of uterus regenerates through proliferation.
These changes in the ovary and the uterus are induced by changes in the levels of pituitary and ovarian hormones.
The secretion of gonadotropins (LH and FSH) increases gradually during the follicular phase, and stimulates follicular development as well as secretion of estrogens by the growing follicles.
(iii) Ovulatory phase (Day 14):
Both LH and FSH attain a peak level in the middle of cycle (about 14th day).
Rapid secretion of LH leading to its maximum level during the mid-cycle called LH surge induces rupture of Graafian follicle and thereby the release of ovum (ovulation).
(iv) Luteal phase / Secretory phase (Day 15-28):
The ovulation (ovulatory phase) is followed by the luteal phase during which the remaining parts of the Graafian follicle transform into the corpus luteum.
The corpus luteum secretes a large amount of progesterone which is essential for maintenance of the endometrium. Such an endometrium is necessary for implantation of the fertilised ovum and other events of pregnancy.
During pregnancy all events of the menstrual cycle stop and there is no menstruation.

The fusion of sperm and ovum takes place at ampullary isthmus junction in oviduct.
